There was a kid in the store with a 336C .30-30 with a junk scope in see through mounts on it, was trying to get a price (and offer to buy, I think) from the clerk. Now this clerk is himself pretty young and my impression ...I purchased a Marlin 917 in stainless steel with heavy barrel, no fluting, grey laminate stock circa 2004. My question, it is clearly prior to Remington but I do not see a JM stamp on the barrel as on my lever Marlins. (I also own several Remlins and they are just fine).

It's a great shooter now, I would contend as much so as any JM stamped Marlin (though not better, either). I have also handled a Microgroove 336 (JM stamp) and found the quality of fit and finish between the two very similar.
